synology

This section will cover some of the geeky computer stuff used in our home setup.  Cameras, NAS devices, virtual servers- you know, normal stuff.  Two of the biggest and geekiest things I use are the Synology DiskStation NAS (network attached storage) and the Antsle cloud server

The Synology NAS does several things for me.  Backup server, DVR for cameras, music storage, Plex server....several other possibilites exist as well.  It can be a DHCP server, a DNS server, web server...pretty cool device.  I'm still exploring it's uses.  Right now I've got about 14 terabytes of storage on it.  Excessive?  I think not.Antsle Product Photos 14

The Anstle device is a cool little solid state virtual server platform.  It provides a real cool way to play with various Linux servers/programs/applications in a virtual world.  You mess one up- kill it and start over again.  Right now it's running our DNS and a couple of learning web servers.  It's another one that I know we've just scratched the surface on what it will do.

Cameras of choice right now are Amcrest.  Good price, good compatibility, easy to get.  We can call them "security" cameras if you wish, but everyone knows we're watching the birds and wildlife with them.  I'm still in the market for a higher end pan-tilt-zoom for more definitive bird watching.  It'll happen some day.

Wireless?  Yeah, we have that too.  Ubiquiti is the product of choice there.  We have four access points spread across the campus, and one point-to-point bridge.  Set 'em and forget 'em.
